4th Year Design Studio 419

2004
Autumn
PUBLIC ATTIC

Course Description
Attic is the memory of the house, a subconscious space where all the objects are connected to stories. The studio was viewing the city as a house and thinking what would be the attic for Taipei.

The course was first time touching the Local Knowledge phenomena in the Taipei City.

2005
Spring
THIS IS THIS AND THIS AIN’S SOMETHING ELSE BUT THIS IS THIS (Local Knowledge I)

Course Description
First course focusing fully on Local Knowledge mirroring Taipei City with Yilan agricultural community. 100 km walk from Taipei City over the mountains to Yilan tracking the ancient trade path. The course was resulting to a book: This is This and This Ain’g Something Else but This is This.

A big void was discovered between the officially approved high-architecture and the locally constructed architectonic and urban reactions, which represents the genuine Taiwanese character.

POST INDUSTRIAL FLEET

Course Description
Design strategies to recycle industrial ships out of use following the CREW*31 Venice Biennale 2004 work. This course was bringing the water element into the urban research and especially started to view Taipei from the river.

Spring
INSTANT TAIPEI (Local Knowledge II)

Course Description
Local Knowledge course trying to define the essence of the Taiwanese character in Taipei and base architectonic design reactions on this Local Knowledge. This course took place in the ruin of the Shylin Paper Factory and through the course the importance of the ruin spaces in the city started to raise up.

2007
Spring
LOCAL KNOWLEDGE (III)

Course Description
Local Knowledge design studio realized in the Sanjhih farming and fishing community and in Taipei City mirroring the realities of the Local Knowledge in two different generations of Taiwanese development of build human environment (Sanjhih 1, Taipei 2). During the course was found the existence of the 3rd generation reality in Sanjhih with factories and restored farms side by side.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE (IV)

Course Description
Local Knowledge design studio in Sanjhih Datun River valley located between the T-Factory and the Pacific Ocean (3km). The students are studying the Local Knowledge in the valley and will design a 50 m2 new farm house based on their research.

HUMAN LAYER

Course Description
First course designed to research the possibilities of Urban Acupuncture. Large scale physical action Human Layer as part of the Taipei on the Move –exhibition. Resulting to a documentary movie Human Layer.

Spring
URBAN ECOLOGY

Course Description
Design studio researching the possibilities of different use of modern high environmental technology as part of architecture and urban planning. The course was raising up the first thinking of the Third Generation City.

URBAN NOMAD

Course Description
Research of the nomad quality of the Taiwanese urban character. Big scale exhibition realization for the Taiwan Design Expo 2005 in Kaoshioung. Resulting to the invitation for the Venice Biennale to represent Taiwan. Publication: PePo.

2006
Spring
ULTRA RUIN

Course Description
First design studio to research ruin architecture: man made has become part of nature. Design reaction based on the ruin quality understanding for architecture shared by man and nature (3rd generation).

2007
Spring
ULTRA RUIN II

Course Description
Design studio in the T-Factory, Sanjhih aiming to design a functional ruin. 1:1 scale realizations in the ruin. During the course I moved to live in the ruin and started a started a deep research of the possibilities of the Ultra Ruin architectural condition.

Autumn
GROWING ARCHITECTURE (ULTRA RUIN III)

Course Description
Design studio in the Datun River valley researching the possibilities to design a site specific ruin. Research based in the T-Factory through 1:1 scale constructions: Cocoon. Basic shelter is the seed of architecture, the rest will grow naturally from this. The studio is connecting the Local Knowledge and the Ultra Ruin.

CONFERENCE AND WORKSHOP: URBAN FLASHES MUMBAI
- Ecological restoration for Oshiwara chain of slums together with a mixed team of Tamkang and Indian students.

INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP: CITYZEN GARDEN
- Working on the Danshui river bank in Zhuwei.

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE COMPETITION: 228 MEMORIAL PARK
- Purchase. The entry was to design a modernist ruin as a mixture of architecture and landscape.
